The Seven Sisters--the imposing chalk
cliffs where the South Downs plunge abruptly to the sea--form the centrepiece of this
delightful walk. The chalk downland, river meadows, salt marshes and lagoons present a
huge variety of wildlife habitats, especially good for flowers and rare insects in Summer
migrating birds in Autumn. The path gently climbs Exceat Hill, overlooking the meanders
of the Cuckfield River and passing the site of Exceat Church dating back to Norman times.
When approaching the cliff edge, take great
care--the soil is extremely clumbly and rock falls are common. Proceed down the shingle
beach, where man-made nesting islands in the lagoons are home to waders and seabirds, and
then follow the river embankment--looking out for kingfishers along the way. |
