Exploring enclosed pasture and rough grassland on the
northern escarpment of the South Downs, one can enjoy a walk which offers splendid views
across The Weald. The popular Clayton windmills are called Jack and Jill - Jack is the
black tower mill; Jill, the white post mill. The latter was moved in the 1820's from
Patcham by a team of oxen. The short, stiff climb
to Wolstonbury Hill is worth it for the views. This Iron Age hillfort is unusual in that
it has the ditch inside the rampart. It was built by throwing downhill the earth excavated
from the ditch. The enclosure within it may be connected with the workings of Wealden iron
ore.
The walk is 5 miles or 8 km and takes about 2.5 hours. |
